Pancho Lara

Philippines Country Manager of International Alert UK

Francisco “Pancho” J. Lara Jr. is currently the Philippines Country Manager of International Alert UK, an international peace building organization based in London.

He was Assistant Professor (1997-1999) and is currently Senior Lecturer (2013-present) in the Department of Sociology, College of Social Sciences and Philosophy, University of the Philippines. He holds degrees from the University of the Philippines, and both MSc and PhD degrees from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). He was also a Research Associate at the LSE Crisis States Research Centre from 2007 to 2010; taught classes at the LSE Development Studies Institute from 2007-2008; and wrote on political economy issues in Indonesia and the Philippines for the LSE-IDEAS Emerging Markets Bulletin from 2007-2009.

Pancho was co-editor in 2013 with Steven Schoofs of a volume on Mindanao’s shadow economies and their links to conflict and poverty entitled: “Out of the Shadows: Violent Conflict and the Real Economy of Mindanao”, published by International Alert UK, London. He was also author of a book entitled “Insurgents, Clans, and States: Political Legitimacy and Resurgent Conflict in Muslim Mindanao,” published in 2014 by Ateneo De Manila University Press, Quezon City.”
