Principal Legal Adviser of UNHCR/Head of the Legal Affairs Service of UNHCR
Mr. Lance Bartholomeusz is UNHCR’s Principal Legal Adviser and Head of Legal Affairs. Before joining UNHCR in 2016, he was the Director of Legal Affairs of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), where he worked for 12 years. He has some 20 years of legal experience in the United Nations, private commercial practice, a domestic appellate court and a government regulatory agency. As a Field Director of UNRWA’s West Bank, Lance implemented a transition in UNRWA’s emergency programme from food to cash-based interventions in early 2016. He has published extensively on various topics of public international law, including the UN’s privileges and immunities, amicus curiae before international courts and tribunals and the mandate of UNRWA.
