Director of Asylum Access Malaysia
As founding Director of Asylum Access Malaysia, Deepa leads the only Malaysian organization dedicated specifically to advancing the human rights of refugees. In her role, she develops policy advocacy strategies to advance refugee rights domestically, and oversees all programs and operations of Asylum Access Malaysia. She currently serves as the Chair of the Asia Pacific Refugee Rights Network’s (APRRN) Southeast Asia Working Group, supporting the development of the network’s advocacy initiatives for the Southeast Asian region. Prior to launching Asylum Access Malaysia, Deepa provided pro bono legal aid to refugees in their Refugee Status Determination (RSD) applications in the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and worked as a Protection Associate with the UNHCR.
She has a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) with Honours from the University of London, and has four years experience in corporate litigation in a leading Malaysian law firm. As a Fulbright scholar, she received an Master of Laws (LL.M) focusing on international law and human rights law from Columbia Law School in New York, and was also awarded the Harlan Fiske Stone Scholarship. Deepa has been admitted to the Bar of England and Wales and the Malaysian Bar.
